Mirror or stream your Linux screen to any device with Deskreen.

If you have a multi-monitor setup, you'll realize the benefits of having multiple screens. And with Deskreen, you can turn any device into your secondary screen.

Deskreen: Turn Any Device into a Secondary Screen for Your Linux System#

Deskreen is a free and open-source application that allows you to use any device with a web browser as a secondary screen for your computer.

It also supports multiple device connections if you wish.

Deskreen is easy to use and works when all your devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Let's take a look at its features and how it works.
Features of Deskreen

The features of Deskreen include the following:

  • Ability to share the entire screen
  • Stream a specific application window
  • Flip mode to use your screen as a teleprompter
  • Support for multiple devices
  • Advanced video quality settings
  • End-to-end encryption
  • Minimal system requirements
  • Dark mode

It's not an exhaustive list of features, but it should be sufficient for most users.

How to Use the Deskreen Application?#

The usage of Deskreen is divided into three simple steps, let me highlight them for you to get started:

First, when you launch the application, it will display a QR code and an IP address to help you connect other devices with a web browser to stream your screen.

You can establish the connection using your preferred method with the help of a web browser on your secondary device.

When you scan the QR code or enter the IP address in the browser's address bar, you will get a prompt on the Deskreen application to allow or deny the connection. Unless you don't recognize it, go ahead and allow it.

Next, you will be asked to select what you want to stream (your entire screen or a specific application window):

You can choose to stream the entire screen or select the window you want to stream. However, not every application window can be detected.

Just select the source and confirm, and you should notice it streaming on your secondary screen (phone/desktop).

Deskreen also provides you with the ability to manage connected devices. So if you need to disconnect any session or all sessions, you can do so from the settings.

Installing Deskreen on Linux#

You will find a DEB package and an AppImage file for Linux machines. If you're unsure, you can refer to our guides on installing DEB packages and using AppImage files.

You can download it from the official website or explore more information on its GitHub page.

Conclusion#

Considering it works over Wi-Fi networks, there are no issues with streaming. It's a wonderful way to share your screen with others or stream it to a second device for any purpose.

Of course, it can't replace the advantages of having a second monitor for your computer, but in some use cases, you may not need a second screen.
